YouTube is littered with videos unboxing YouTube Play Buttons—but what are they? What are the different types of Play Buttons exist? And how much subscribers does one need in order to get one?
In this article, we’ll talk about each Play Button, how many subscribers do you need to get them, and how to get yours.
But before anything else…some housekeeping.
What is a YouTube Play Button?
A YouTube Play Button is a commemorative plaque awarded to a YouTuber whose channel gained a certain number of subscribers.
These buttons are awarded as part of the YouTube Creator Award program, meant to acknowledge the platform’s best and most subscribed channels. The above short video tells a bit about the program.
Interestingly, people have been meme-ing the buttons hard, most famous perhaps is the What’s Inside? video that (sorry for the pun) broke the internet.

What kinds of YouTube Play Buttons are there?
There are currently five types of Play Buttons in existence, with one sent out to an ‘elite’ of channels that have hit an enormous number of YouTube subscribers, and a literally one-of-a-kind, specially designed button sent to PewDiePie.
The different types of Play Buttons are:
Silver Play Button
Gold Play Button
Diamond Play Button
Ruby Play Button – Bro-Fist Design sent to PewDiePie
Red Diamond Play Button
Silver Play Button – 100,000 subscribers
This is the smallest Play Button YouTube gives its creators. You only need to hit 100,000 subscribers—but make no mistake, 100K subs is no small feat. And the YouTubers in this league have doubtless worked hard for the distinction.
Gold Play Button – 1,000,000 subscribers
Hitting a million subscribers on YouTube is more commonplace now than ever. Still, this is a feat that is aptly awarded with a plaque made with material no less than gold.
Diamond Play Button – 10,000,000 subscribers
Now we’re in the big leagues. Channels like MKBHD and Mr. Beast who have surpassed the 10-million mark receive this distinction.
Ruby Play Button (Bro-Fist, PewDiePie) – 50,000,000 subscribers
Especially made for PewDiePie and designed with the Bro-Fist logo in mind, this special edition Ruby Play Butto was given to Pewds in 2016, when he hit 50 million subscribers.
Step 2: YouTube will notify you that you are eligible for the award one week after hitting a certain number of subscribers. It’s worth reiterating that YouTube keeps full reign as to who they grant the award.
If you’re eligible, YouTube will then send you a unique redemption code which you will use when you key in your shipping information.
Step 3: Wait for your YouTube Play Button to arrive.
