Which postpaid plan should you get?

Samsung hit the airwaves last week with the official announcement of the Galaxy Note 9—a slight, but welcome refinement to its predecessor, the already gorgeous and robust Note 8. The phones themselves won’t hit shelves in a couple of weeks, but pre-order periods have kicked off, which means telco companies like Globe and Smart have released postpaid details as well.

Which brings us to this post, in which we compare Smart and Globe postpaid plans for the Galaxy Note 9. We’ll compare both companies’ plans to help you make an informed decision when getting Samsung’s best phone yet.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9: If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!

Before we get to the nitty-gritty of the postpaid plans, here’s the lowdown on the Galaxy Note 9.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 returns in familiar and formidable fashion: a large 6.4-inch screen with teensy bezels, a gorgeously immersive Super AMOLED-powered WQHD+ display, and bold color options to fit any and all personalities.

Inside, it’s even more promising: Samsung’s new beastly phone ships with a robust Exynos 9810 octa-core processor, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/512GB internal storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with fast-charging and wireless charging support.

The cameras are worth noting, too. The dual camera system sports both a wide and a zoom lens, powered by large dual 12-megapixel sensors with f/2.4 and f/1.5 apertures. The self-camera is an 8-megapixel shooter with an impressive f/1.7 aperture, which should allow for brighter, better selfies. Most interesting—at least to me!—is that this camera is chucked snuggly in the phone’s slim *ahem* notch-less bezel.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9: Smart and Globe postpaid plans, compared

Both Globe Telecom and Smart Communications offer a wide selection of postpaid plans. Let’s get one thing out of the way: you will not get a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 for free on any of either companies’ postpaid plans (except Globe’s ThePLAN 2,799).

If you want the Note 9, you’ll most likely have to shell out a sum of money or pay it through amortization.

For this comparison, we’re using the companies’ 1,499 plans—a price point I think many are generally comfortable paying monthly. Let’s break it down.

Smart vs Globe: Which postpaid plan is better?

Total Cost PHP 67,176 PHP 72,774 PHP 67,176

Each plan comes with their own hits and misses. Smart’s GigaX Plan 1499, for instance, comes with a much smaller initial cashout, but they offset that by ramping up your monthly cost to PHP 2,799. And it’s worth noting that you will technically have to be approved for the PHP 2,799 monthly credit to avail of the plan, otherwise you’re stuck with the other plan with PHP 32,699 initial cashout.

That said, both Smart postpaid plans come with All-net calls (60 minutes, consumable) and texts (unlimited). They’re also packed with a 5GB Open Access/10GB video data allocation combo that pairs quite well with Globe’s 8GB Open Access/1GB Spotify data allocation.

Globe’s ThePLAN 1499 also comes with its usual perks: unlimited Globe/TM calls, 6-month access to Disneylife, and Globe Gadget Care. Like with Smart’s postpaid plans, Globe locks you out with a 24-month contract.
