Aside: Information is sparse at the moment, but this is clearly an exciting addition. Rest assured we’ll update this article when new info become available.

Alongside Apple’s announcement of iOS 15 comes that of FaceTime Links. FaceTime, for those who don’t know, is Apple’s own video messaging app, similar to Microsoft’s Skype.

For the longest time, FaceTime has been exclusive to the Apple ecosystem. But with FaceTime Links, it looks like Android and Windows 10 users are going to be able to access it too.

Basically, Apple will let users share links to FaceTime calls so that others can join in. This effectively aligns the service with video conferencing giants like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams.

FaceTime Links will presumably come with the bulk of already available FaceTime features, so there’s that. And as aforementioned, link sharing and cross-platform availability are all but confirmed.

In the same announcement, Tim Cook also made it clear that FaceTime Links calls are going to have end-to-end encryption, aligned with Apple’s ongoing mission to protect user privacy. You can also schedule calls.

More additions include a new grid view, a voice isolation feature and spatial audio support similar to that of Discord’s Krisp noise suppression, and SharePlay, which lets users watch or listen to the same media at the same time (basically a watch party).

There’s no current information about pricing for FaceTime Links. But we can safely assume that it is going to be free, or at least freemium.

I can see them offer it through the Apple One subscription, though much like Google Meet through Google One.

As of press time, FaceTime Links has just been announced as part of iOS 15. This version of the OS is now available for developers. The beta is available for download sometime in July.
